Fuse Box Upgrade & Electrical Panel Expansion in Amsterdam
Moving to Amsterdam — or already living here — and running into electrical problems? Whether your circuit breaker keeps tripping, you want to install an EV charger, or you're planning to go fully electric in your home, it often starts with the same thing: your fuse box needs to be upgraded or expanded.
Nexon Energie specialises in fuse box upgrades, electrical panel expansions and 3-phase power installations for homeowners and VvE (homeowners' associations) in Amsterdam and the wider region. We work with expats and international residents on a regular basis and communicate clearly in English — no confusion, no surprises.
The Dutch fuse box — what you need to know
If you've recently moved to the Netherlands from the UK, US, or elsewhere, the Dutch electrical system may look a little unfamiliar. What you're looking for is the meterkast — the meter cupboard — which typically contains your electricity meter, your main switch (hoofdschakelaar), and your groepenkast or distribution board. This is where all the individual circuits in your home are protected by circuit breakers (automaten) and RCD switches (aardlekschakelaars).
Many homes in Amsterdam — particularly in older neighbourhoods like De Pijp, Oud-West, Jordaan and Amsterdam-Oost — were built with installations designed for a fraction of today's electrical demand. If your home was built before the 1980s, there's a good chance the panel has too few circuits for modern use and may not meet current Dutch safety standards (NEN 1010).
A typical sign that your fuse box needs attention: the circuit breaker trips regularly when you run multiple appliances at the same time, or you're unable to add a new high-consumption device without overloading the system.
When do you need a fuse box upgrade or expansion?
Upgrading your electrical panel is necessary when your current installation can no longer handle your power needs safely. Expansion adds extra circuits to your existing panel. A full upgrade replaces the panel entirely and may include an increase in connection capacity. This is often needed when:
Living in a canal house or older Amsterdam property?
Amsterdam's iconic canal houses and pre-war apartment buildings are beautiful — but they often come with outdated electrical systems. Aluminium wiring, old ceramic fuse boxes, and installations with only two or three circuits are still common in the city centre and historic neighbourhoods. These systems are not equipped for modern appliances and can pose a genuine safety risk.
If you've just bought or rented a home in Amsterdam and you're not sure about the state of the electrical installation, it's always worth having it assessed. We can inspect your current panel, explain what needs to be done in plain English, and provide a clear quote — before any work begins.
Working with VvE in Amsterdam
Amsterdam has thousands of apartment buildings managed by a VvE (Vereniging van Eigenaren — homeowners' association). If you own an apartment and want to install an EV charger or the building's shared installation needs upgrading, this typically involves a VvE decision. Nexon Energie has experience supporting VvE's with electrical upgrades and can advise on both the technical and practical side of the process.
